MARKET UPDATE AUGUST 21, 2023

Good afternoon,

California GRAPES are in great SUPPLY and QUALITY! As children head back to school here in the states, many snack and weeknight dinner items have come into high demand. GRAPES offer a nice reprieve from some of the market craziness with BLACK, RED, and GREEN SEEDLESS varieties all featuring strong availability and quality. GLOBES are the last variety to come on for the season, so next week will be the first week with some decent volume on California RED GLOBES.

PEACHES and NECTARINES are both in high demand for back to school lunches but unfortunately, supplies are falling well behind. The shortage has sent market pricing higher the last few weeks, so it may be time to allocate more of your purchasing over to PLUMS. PLUMS, PLUMCOTS, PLUOTS, and most PLUM derivatives are in good supply offered up at reasonable prices.

We have word on new crop APPLE start dates and they go as follows:

Mid/late August - GALA, GINGER GOLD, HONEYCRISP.

Early/Mid September - GRANNY SMITH, GOLD DELICIOUS.

Late September/Early October - RED, AMBROSIA, FUJI.

Washington PEARS will start in late August with BOSC, D'ANJOU, and RED D'ANJOU varieties available in late September. Until then, we will have BARTLETT PEARS as a substitute.

GREEN ONION supplies have been well ahead of schedule for several weeks. Warmer temperatures and favorable growing conditions pushed this commodity along all season but unfortunately, that strong push of availability has put us in a SUPPLY GAP. Look for pricing to severly increase over the next few weeks. We expect to see some minor quality issues on GREEN ONIONS as growers look to get back on scallion schedule.

More as it happens,

Parker Tannehill
