Market Update June 26, 2023

APPLE and PEAR harvests begin in August and only last for a few months. Growers will store fruit in controlled atmosphere rooms to maintain the fruit at an ideal state in the hopes that the late summer harvest can carry them through the next 10-12 months. We are now in the midst of summer and typical of this time of year, APPLE and PEAR supplies are dropping causing prices to increase. It seems that small GALA and all REDS should finish off the season in good standing. However, GOLD and GRANNY SMITH APPLES are moving in the opposite direction and are going to be difficult and expensive to source until new crop comes around in early September.

California GRAPE supplies are beginning to pick up and with that, markets look to continue to become more competitive. After an extended shortage of all GRAPE varieties, we will continue to see some much needed pricing relief. Look for increases in availability for both Mexican and domestic grapes over the next few weeks.

CHERRIES, CHERRIES, CHERRIES; we haven't seen a cherry market like this in years! Supplies in Washington started off ahead of schedule with a surplus of fruit. Thanks to high availability, growers are incentivised to push out as much fruit as they can to keep up with their inventories. We expect to see favorable CHERRY pricing for the next month or so.

Although CELERY markets remain high, we are on the verge of new supplies out of Northern California. We will have another couple weeks of market activity and should see some additional relief in mid July, or hopefully sooner.

South eastern HEAT and RAIN is causing some quality issues on eastern veg items. We have seen difficulties with TOMATO, SQUASH, PEPPER, and even cabbages and hard squash. We will see plenty of seasonal starts and stops on these commodities as production moves from Florida to Georgia, to the Carolinas, and finally Michigan, New York, and Ohio.
