MARKET UPDATE 03.14.25
Good afternoon,
FLORIDA STRAWBERRY production is beginning to decline. Although temperatures have cooled this week, we are seeing high temperatures at the peak of the day causing some issues with overripe fruit. In order to acquire the best fruit possible, we are moving our operation out WEST to California. Unfortunately, costs are going to increase next week but the improved QUALITY will be worth the expense. DRISCOLL'S EXPORT strawberries are back in action as of next week!
BROCCOLI has received some commentary for the last several weeks in our market updates and not for the best of reasons. But today, instead of explaining the tribulations of late season crops, we can mention BROCCOLI with some GOOD NEWS! SALINAS production has started early and we are expecting a good chunk of fresh crop BROCCOLI for next week's arrival. Product is only starting ina light way but once more shippers are harvesting up north we should see extended shelf life and better color on BROCCOLI.
CELERY production looks to remain strong for the next few weeks! Supplies out of California and Florida are off and running keeping markets extremely competitive. We expect supplies to outpace demand for at least another 2-3 weeks so keep on pushing that CELERY!
CHERRIES are done for the season. There will still be some supplies kicking around in local markets but they shouldn't travel much farther than that. We have received good reports out of California for this season's crop, so although we will be in a gap on fruit until mid-May, the summer season numbers should be great post Memorial Day.
We are just starting to see the slow down in South Florida veg production. Markets have tightened slightly on dry veg like GREEN BELL PEPPERS and SQUASH as harvests start to dry up. Production looks to be steady in the northern part of the state, but this quick cold snap is going to slow us down for the first week or so. Brace for some small bumps in the road ahead on eastern veg.
The cost of AVOCADO imports are on the rise due to tariff scares, higher labor costs, and limited supplies. The ideal mid-sizes like 60ct AVOCAOS are scarce. We may have to shift to a smaller size for next week depending on what is available at time of loading.
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
