MARKET UPDATE 09.15.24
Good afternoon,
Washington NEW CROP APPLES are getting started! We are still seeing early varieties, like GINGER GOLD as opposed to a GOLD DELICIOUS, but new GALAS are being harvested out of both WA and the east coast. More varieties will start coming on as we near October. BOSC and ANJOU PEARS out of Washington are still another few weeks out. We have California Bosc and Washington BARTLETT pears to fill the gap.
ASPARAGUS pricing has started to come up as supplies out of Mexico are not sizing up enough. Smaller sizing is more readily available at the moment and we expect to see a jump in pricing from STANDARD to JBO or even LARGE. Peruvian harvests should pick up in a few weeks, aiding supplies and market pricing.
RED, YELLOW, and ORANGE BELL PEPPER are all in great quality out of Canada. The northern peppers have been much more solid than what we saw out of Mexico at the end of August.
BLUEBERRIES are going to be a challenge for another two, maybe three weeks. The late season fruit out of the Pacific Northwest has not been the best, but unfortunately we are stuck with late fruit on all fronts until we see significant volume out of Peru or Mexico, probably in another two weeks.
Mexican MANGOES are finished up! Brazillian supplies are slow to start and in short supply, driving up pricing.
CABBAGE harvests are gapping in California and in the Northeast. There are good enough supplies to go around, but markets have tightened a bit, bringing pricing up for the week.
STONE FRUIT season is still going strong but we expect to see a decline in the next few weeks. Typically, PEACHES and NECTARINES are the first to go, sometime in early October. With all of the heat this season, quality issues may pop up sooner than years past and bring on an early end to the deal. PLUMS will power through October as they are the last of the stone fruit varieties to come on and finish up.
Cool nights in CANADA have slowed down LETTUCE and ROMAINE growth. Luckily supplies over on the west coast are still going strong. So, in an odd twist of events, California leafy greens are the more affordable purchase for next week!
More as it happens,
