MARKET UPDATE 10.20.24
Good afternoon,
LETTUCE is just barely getting going out of Huron, California. As production wraps up in Salinas, 120 miles Northwest, Huron provides brief relief while Yuma Arizona supplies continue to grow closer to harvest. Production is predominantly ROMAINE and LETTUCE in this region and should overlap into the winter crop that will start in November. Next week, we will see a lot more availability of LETTUCE in HURON and possibly some ROMAINE too.
ASPARAGUS supplies are beginning to improve out of Mexico. After several weeks of lighter production out of both PERU and MEXICO, we seem to be on the other side of the shortage. The trend of improved quality and better pricing will look to continue into next week.
PEACHES and NECTARINES are finished for the season. PLUMS will be available for the next several weeks out of California, and possibly bridge the gap into the Chilean stone fruit season. Speaking of, CHERRIES are only a few weeks away. Pricing will be higher to start as all of the early fruit is flown in. Ocean container fruit begins around the New year and will help bring pricing down around the same time. We have partnered with packers that are going to put up 12 x 1.5lb clamshells specifically for su this season!
Hurricanes Helene and Milton brought on severe damage to crops throughout the Carolinas, Tennessee, Georgia, and Florida. TOMATOES are just one of the commodities that have been affected but the impact we are seeing on supply is significant.
Acres of BELL PEPPER, CORN, EGGPLANT, SQUASH, and CUCUMBERS were completely wiped out by the recent Hurricanes. If it is not outright loss of production, we will also see quality issues arise from the high levels of wind and water that the surviving fields faced.
Despite the trouble, there is almost always a solution! We will be looking to Mexico and maybe even California for the right quality produce while we deal with this difficult situation in the Southeastern United States.
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
