MARKET UPDATE 12.29.24
Good afternoon,
Merry Christmas, Happy Chanukah, and Happy Boxing Day! We would like to wish you all well and hope you have had a great holiday season thus far.
It has become an unfortunate norm: EGG prices surge to unhealthy heights around the holidays. For over two years now we have seen complications from the Avian Flu. Flocks of Hens are much smaller than they were a few years back as farms simply have not had the opportunity to recover. We have seen the same combination of issues the last few years; a resurgence of the flu in the colder months, increased demand for eggs around the holidays, and an already weakened EGG supply. Prices continue to be abnormally high but we hope to see some relief as holiday demand subsides.
California veg continues to settle into lower price levels! CAULIFLOWER is the one holdout, hovering around the $40 mark, but the rest of the west coast veg basket is in a healthy spot. Good quality and good supplies with produce priced to move!
Canadian CARROTS have provided consistency this season. Markets have been steady and quality has been great, much improved from late last season.
CHERRIES are now fully imported by boat. As the more affordably freighted fruit arrives, importers will pull back the reins on airfreight as pricing throws them right out of the market. Quality is good on the boat fruit so take advantage of the sweet spot now while it lasts!
BLUEBERRIES have split into a two tier market. We dispatched our resources this week in search of validation of a promise, great quality BLUEBERRIES at unbelievably cheap pricing! Unfortunately, upon our encounter of the fruit, it had seen better days. Soft and not suitable for local sale, let alone export, we had to leave the product and promise of a cheap deal behind. There is a clear seperation of quality in the blueberry market and we always shop quality first here at GPS.

More as it happens,
