MARKET UPDATE AUGUST 29, 2022
Good afternoon,
NEW CROP APPLES are picking up steam this week and GALA markets are showing signs of life as we are only a week or so away from healthy supplies out of Washington and Michigan. FUJI, GRANNY SMITH, and GOLD varieties will be another few weeks behind galas, but expect MARKETS to SOFTEN on all apples in September.
D.ANJOU PEARS are completely wiped out in Washington. We will be working off of storage inventory next week but will sell out fast. To supplement your demand through the supply gap, we have NEW CROP California BARTLETT PEARS! Bartlett pears are very aromatic and are often sweeter than the d'anjou variety.
Supplies on HASS AVOCADOS are peaking! Market pricing has come off and shippers are looking to move fruit, especially larger sizes.
CARROT supplies are getting started up in Canada while Mexico continues on with strong supplies. It will be a few weeks before these two markets even out, so look for Mexican carrots to hold a price advantage over our northern neighbors for another few weeks. With school being back in session, 30/1LB BABY CARROTS are a great snack item for the kids.
SQUASH supplies are struggling on the east coast due to inclimate weather. YELLOW SQUASH and ZUCCHINI are very difficult to source at the right size, price, and quality. At this point in the season on the east coast, we have CORN, CUCUMBER, PEPPER, SQUASH, and more all coming out of several different states. The challenge is finding the right state where quality and price line up on this vast variety of goods.
Canadian LETTUCE growers were faced with a gap in production this week. While California markets continued to sky rocket, there couldn't have been a worse week in the season for this supply gap. The GOOD NEWS is that we are back into strong supplies out of Canada this week on LETTUCE and ROMAINE. Canadian CABBAGE and PEPPER are in great supply as well.
We would be remiss not to mention LETTUCE and LEAF out of California, however, markets continue on the same trend with prices climbing due to supply shortages. This trend looks to continue for several weeks.
We are finished on WASHINGTON CHERRIES and it feels safe to say, with all of the ugly supply reports early on, we did a fine job dodging the landmines and keeping solid fruit in stock. STONE FRUIT is still going strong in California, so let's push those STONE FRUIT specials while supplies are hot!
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
