MARKET UPDATE JULY 04-09, 2021
Good afternoon,
Severe HEAT warnings continue this week on both coasts of the United States and in parts of Canada. California and Washington are facing some of the worst of this record setting heat wave, putting several commodities in jeopardy.
GRAPE supplies are coming on strong in California. Next week we will have some beautiful SCARLETT ROYALS and AUTMN CRISP grapes. Prices are up slightly as we are moving into larger fruit with better quality. While things heat up, it's important to stick with higher quality fruit. A slightly higher price tag will pay off in dividends thanks to prolonged shelf life.
We have seen some relief on CLAMSHELL STONE FRUIT prices this week. Sweet NECTARINES, PEACHES, and PLUMS are in full swing and available in two-pound clamshells.
LETTUCE and LEAF commodities out of California have seen some high temperatures already this season. If you can recall last summer, quality struggled across the board due to the dry heat. Reports are anticipating a slight cool down next week which will be much needed!
NAVEL ORANGES have a week or two of supplies left and we will be switching over to VALENCIAS. We anticipate a smooth transition, but smaller sizes will get even more snug than they have been recently.
Eastern veg looks to be drying up a bit down in Georgia and moving up the coastline. The annual transition from Florida to Georgia, to the Carolinas, and up to Michigan and Canada can be a tough one. In just a few months, supplies of BELL PEPPER, SQUASH, EGGPLANT, CUCUMBERS, and others move through several states. The scattershot of supply out of drastically different growing areas provides some serious challenges for trucking and product condition.
More as it happens,
