MARKET UPDATE JUNE 1-4, 2021
Good afternoon,
Seasonal conditions have provided us with a smooth transition into this year's California cycle. Fruit is getting off to a solid start and veg markets have been steady since we moved up to Salinas several weeks ago.
APPLE supplies continue to decline as controlled atmosphere rooms are cleared and the fruit is sorted. We are seeing demand exceed supply on SMALL GALA, GRANNY SMITH, and GOLD varieties. We are a long way away from any new crop apples, so expect these trends to continue through AUGUST into SEPTEMBER.
PEARS follow the same trend line, but we have a steady flow of imports to rely on as Washington supplies finish up. For larger sized fruit, we are already switching over to Argentinian BOSC and D'ANJOU PEARS. Sizing 100ct and smaller are tight on both domestic and import fruit.
CANTALOUPES and HONEYDEWS are finally gaining some traction in the desert with supplies picking up and fruit starting to sweeten! The best availability is in larger fruit, 6ct and larger on dews and 12ct and larger loupes.
SMALL ORANGES are TIGHT out of California. Florida oranges are finishing up, pressing demand out west to California ORANGES. The NAVEL crop is nearing the end of the season and favorable conditions are causing the upcoming VALENCIA crop to grow BIG! That means better availability on larger fruit and weaker supply on small fruit for this crop that will last through the summer.
We are beginning to see better supplies on LIMES cross into the US this week. Look for some relief on pricing but do not expect the market to fall completely as supplies are still trailing demand.
LEMON supplies will remain tight through JUNE. Domestic supplies will downtrend due to transition leaving higher markets until we see imports arrive in late June.
