MARKET UPDATE OCT 26-30, 2020
Good Afternoon,
A mixed forecast is set for the Northern California coastal region this week. We have received a steady dose of above average temperatures this season, but a deepened marine layer looks to bring down lows and highs heading into the weekend. After such a rough season for LETTUCE, LEAF, and most commodities in California, hopefully we get one or two more good weeks before we transition down to YUMA, AZ.
Some items are in good availability out West. BROCCOLI supplies have picked up in the past few weeks as we are seeing some better numbers out of Mexico. Thanks to the excess availability, BROCCOLI prices have come down this week.
CAULIFLOWER supplies have also recovered recently. We are still seeing some minor discoloration, but supplies are plentiful and markets are affordable!
ASPARAGUS prices continue to come off due to an influx of supply. It seems that the product coming out of Mexico has some issues from the excessive heat we have been seeing, so we will see how long the favorable pricing lasts.
We are nearing the FLORIDA season! CITRUS is starting while dry and mixed veg are not far behind. We will be seeing some light volume on FLORIDA citrus for a few weeks until the season really gets going. PEPPER, SQUASH, TOMATOES, and FLORIDA LETTUCE are coming soon!
We continue to see the adverse effects of this year, a historically hot summer, product with ash damage and disease from wildfires in California, limited harvesting crews due to COVID restrictions, as well as farmers dropping acreage on account of all the uncertainty this year has provided us. We anticipate a pretty significant change once the product shifts down to YUMA, AZ in a few weeks. We are always dependant on the mood swings of Mother Nature, but it looks like our fall and winter season will bring us a bit closer to some regularity; indeed something we can all use a little bit more of.
More as it happens,
Thank you,
Parker Tannehill
