MARKET UPDATE SEPTEMBER 13-17, 2021
Good afternoon,
Northern California and areas around the San Joaquin Valley are seeing acres of land go up in flames. As of this week, nearly 2 million acres have been consumed by this year's wildfires. The very sad and sobering fact that these numbers are equal to what they were last September says a lot about the changes in our climate and challenges we will face in our future. As the wildfires continue to burn and most of California under heat advisories, the implications on our crops and agriculture are clear and obvious.
The Salinas/Watsonville areas are nearing the end of STRAWBERRY production. Product is getting going in Santa Maria and we are moving our supplies down south to hunt for improved shelf life! With the transition of fruit, raging wildfires, driver shortages, and heat advisories, the market is on the rise.
Offshore supplies of CLEMENTINES are nearing the end of their run. Quality has been hit or miss and it looks like next week may very well be the last week of availability until Moroccan supplies become available.
LETTUCE, ROMAINE, and BROCCOLI markets shot up towards the end of last week and have continued to tighten this week. We are seeing a lack of supply on all three commodities and market pricing is reacting accordingly. A very HOT summer will bring challenges as we near the late stages of the season.
D'ANJOU PEARS are unavailable. If you are looking for a GREEN PEAR substitute, look no further than BARTLETT pears. BOSC PEARS remain available out of California as Washington harvests ramp up through the month of September.
STONE FRUIT season is also nearing its end out in California. Value added packs will be the first to go as shippers focus their remaining inventories towards volume fill and tray pack orders.
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
