MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 12 - 2020
Good Afternoon,
Amidst this global pandemic, the flow of information is more than enough to leave the public overwhelmed. To stay ahead of the curve, we are in contact with ports and ship lines daily, gathering all the relevant information possible. The sentiment between all parts remains the same, our operations remain critical now more than ever. In order to put safety first and continue to service our clients in need, we are doubling down on social distancing, working remotely, and increased sanitation protocol. Our commitment to service and safety will not waiver during these trying times.
As of today, March 19th, 2020, there are no cargo restrictions to any of the ports we service.
This past Wednesday, the United States and Canada mutually agreed to shut down our shared border. This DOES NOT include the transportation of perishables. As alarming as the news may sound, it is highly reassuring that both countries understand how vital our supply chain is in surviving this crisis. We have absolutely no expectation of a shutdown due to the essential nature of our business but will keep you all informed every step of the way.
The closure of hotels, restaurants, and most of the foodservice industry has been severely damaging to businesses around the globe. We are seeing a massive surge in demand from retail stores and dramatic cuts from foodservice. The market is in a weird place. Uncertainty has prevailed and the public continues to line up outside of grocery stores daily. ALL MARKETS ON RETAIL GOODS will surge for the next week or so. Hard goods like POTATOES, ONIONS, CABBAGE, CARROTS, APPLES and PEARS are all in extremely high demand.
Mid-March is normally the time that we go crazy trying to match up the transition between the winter season in ARIZONA and the spring season in CALIFORNIA. As this is the least of our worries today, it is still a major factor in availability and logistics. RAIN has pounded YUMA growing regions again this week and we expect to see some waterlogged product. LETTUCE fields have started to produce in Huron, Ca but we are still a few weeks away from a major switch.
Pricing is going to be up and down across the board but now is a better time than ever for us to communicate and come together. Please let us know of your troubles, concerns, questions, and needs; That.s what were here for. Please stay safe and patient, knowing that this too shall pass eventually.
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
