MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 18 - 2020
Good Afternoon,
We are starting to see a bit more activity on the demand side this week. Hopefully, that is a sign of good things to come! Conditions in California are ideal this week while Mexico and Florida are also slotted for some healthy growing conditions, with a bit of heat and rain.
KIWI prices continue to rise this week. Supplies out of ITALY and GREECE are finishing up and to make matters worse, CHILEAN exports are down about 30% from last year. We should see some better volume out of Chile in the next few weeks.
APPLES are starting to get active! Retail sizes 88 and larger are under high demand and as a result, supplies are struggling to keep up. Most varieties are readily available, but we are seeing a significant shortage of LARGE GALAS this week. Markets will most likely be up on sizes 88 and larger for the remainder of the season.
AVOCADOES are snug this week. MEXICO supplies remain a bit behind schedule and buyers are moving into more expensive California fruit to cover orders. As growers move into new fields in Mexico, we should see things loosen up a bit. GREEN SKIN avocadoes are also short as supplies out of the DR are gapping.
California veg markets are doing quite well this week. There are good volumes available on BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER. ICEBERG lettuce is seeing some labor shortages and a slight uptick in pricing. ROMAINE, GREEN and RED leaf are all in good supply and ready to move!
California ORANGES are in a tight spot. SIZING 113 and smaller are near non-existent. NAVELS like to grow larger than VALENCIAS and as we get towards the end of the navel crop, only the bigger fruit remains. Small sizes and choice packs are very limited. We are looking at a few week gap between late NAVELS and VALENCIAS. We will get everything we can on mid/small size fruit, but please be aware that subbing into 88's might be the only way to get orders covered.
More as it happens,
