MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 20 - 2020
Good Afternoon,
We are honored to announce that Global Perishable Services, with the aid of the U.S government and local charities, will distribute thousands of mixed produce boxes to families and individuals in need, right here in South Florida. We are incredibly grateful to have this opportunity to serve our community. We would like to give an enormous thank you to our domestic partnerships as well as our partners on island!
This program is a win-win-win. Farmers get the extra demand they have been lacking, distributors get an opportunity to package these goods, and most importantly, people in need will receive sustenance, free of charge. However, the sudden shock in demand that came from this stimulus package has made a significant impact on several commodities.
CABBAGE markets are going up this week. Supplies are moving from Florida to Georgia and the Carolinas. Back in February, two straight weeks of Georgia rain forced a gap in planting, which is contributing to the shortage on harvest today. We are also seeing a huge hike in demand this week from the Farmers to Families program. We will see some higher pricing on cabbage until better supplies are available out of Georgia in the next few weeks.
APPLES are also seeing a spike in demand from the government program. Speaking with one shipper in Washington, he went from selling two to three loads of RED 12/3 apples in a day, to shipping 30 straight loads just yesterday. Supply lines are not ready for this kind of demand, especially this late in the season. Look for higher pricing on 12/3 apples and an earlier end to eastern supply than expected.
GREEN GRAPES will be from Mexico next week. Import supplies continue to dwindle and the better quality on green seedless seems to be out of Mexico. REDS, GLOBES, and BLACKS will be from Chile for at least another week.
Import WATERMELONS are finished up for the season. Prices on the domestic fruit will be higher.
The Costa Rican government is limiting the number of CHAYOTE to be exported. Fresh CHAYOTE is becoming very difficult to find as supplies out of Mexico are not yet available.
GREEN SKIN AVOCADOES are very short on supply out of The Dominican Republic. We expect a tight market until we see Florida supplies in a few weeks.
California STONE FRUIT and CHERRIES are available! Please give us a heads up on large orders!
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
