MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 25

Good Afternoon,

The hot, wet weather we have been seeing for the past few weeks seems to be lightening up a bit on the West Coast. The eastern seaboard and Mexican growing regions are still seeing seasonably warm temperatures. The above average warmth has proven to help some commodities and hurt others.

AVOCADOS are still in a demand exceeds situation. Mexico old crop supplies are still on the decline without any new crop to speak of. California supplies are decent but with such a shortage in the rest of North America, markets will remain active.

RASPBERRY import supplies have dwindled this week. We are seeing less and less fruit available locally and have switched over to California product where supplies are adequate at best. With the market just barely producing enough to cover demand, prices have come up a bit. Quality seems to be strong on the West Coast fruit so we should be sticking with it until further notice.

The recent warm weather that has forced lettuce and leaf into supply shortages has actually helped BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER. Markets in California dropped to significantly low FOB's on both commodities due to faster growth in the heat. Although the heat helped in CA, the heat on the crowns out of Mexico was melting all the ice, and causing the product to mature too quickly. Like the raspberries, we have switched over to California Broccoli until the situation gets better. Please be aware that once this market comes off the floor, California prices will be stronger than Mexico, however, the shelf life should be worth the extra few bucks.

LETTUCE, LEAF, PARSLEY, SPINACH, and ARUGULA are all seeing trouble from the hot weather out west. High temps resulted in damaged crops, which led to short supplies, which now leads us to the high markets that we are seeing today. Please understand this is industry wide and if you are looking for perfectly clean looking lettuce and leaf, California is not the answer until the weather cools a bit more.

With that being said, CANADIAN LETTUCE AND ROMAINE will be available for next weeks sailings! All signs are pointing to strong quality so we will be offering ICEBERG, ROMAINE, ROMAINE HEARTS, and WRAP 24ct ICEBERG out of Canada for next week!

PEARS are running low, especially on sizing 100 and smaller. We should still have enough supply to carry us through next week on domestic fruit but expect a switch over to imports from Argentina and/or Chile within the next few weeks.

More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
