MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 28 - 2020

Good Afternoon,

Peppers, squash, eggplants, and cukes continue to transition up the east coast this week. This transition is particularly tough as there are several different states producing product, all with their own challenges.

CABBAGE has gone up in price this week. We were doing the hokey pokey with CABBAGE out of the Carolinas for the past few weeks; one week in and another week out, but the dance has finally ended. As supplies run dry in the southern states, northern states like Delaware and New Jersey come into play.

PEPPERS continue to be a PAIN! RED, YELLOW, and ORANGE PEPPERS are severely limited. Supplies have been gaping for the past week and that theme looks to continue into July. Harvests are moving north to San Luis, MX and as of now, availability is not quite there yet. Rain and overcast skies are holding the peppers back from maturation.

GREEN BELL PEPPERS are limited all up the eastern seaboard. There is some new crop popping up in the Carolinas, but markets are still active.

BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER markets are coming off. Supplies finally caught up late last week and we are now seeing the market reaction.

CELERY has moved in the opposite direction as prices nearly doubled from last week. Supplies are especially limited on SMALL SIZES (36ct). Demand has picked up as some states loosen social distancing restrictions. We are seeing this increase in demand on several different items.

GRAPE supplies are steady out of Mexico as California supplies pick up steam. Look for the price gap between MX and CA to shrink over the next few weeks.

ONION markets are up! Supplies out of New Mexico and California are falling well short of demand. Supply was light due to unseasonably warm weather, and now the shortage has been extended with the continuation of the Farmers to Families Food Box Program.

POTATOES are seeing a very similar market reaction as onions but not as severe.

STRAWBERRY supplies are steady in California. BLUEBERRIES are of strong quality out of New Jersey and markets are beginning to come off. RASPBERRIES are looking tight for the next few weeks as markets rely heavily on Mexican production.
