MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 34 - 2020

Good Afternoon,

CELERY supplies have started to pick up this week. Increased production out of Michigan and Canada has helped move things along. Salinas supplies are also picking up so we may see some more improvement in this market next week.

We continue to see LOW VOLUMES on ROMAINE and ROMAINE HEARTS. Some shippers are reporting better numbers than others, but overall, we are seeing a deficit on supply. Marginal fringe burn continues to be expected.

Availability on CAULIFLOWER and BROCCOLI continues to be strong this week!

ORANGES are scarce and that trend does not look to change any time soon. Demand has been strong and the rumblings of the third round of the FFFB program have not helped. The program is using up all of the choice grade fruit, leaving only more expensive fancy grade to be had. Look for orange sizes 88 and smaller to remain tight at least through the rest of the month. Please give us as much lead time as you can on oranges to help get your orders covered.

CABBAGE numbers are getting better. Like celery, we are seeing Canadian supplies help bring down market costs. There have been some cheap offers out there but from what we have seen, the cheap stuff is underweight.

LAST CALL ON CHERRIES! We should have some cherries next week, but quantities will be limited. There will still be some suppliers offering out fruit but as the adage goes, "You never want to be the first in, or the last out". This statement is especially true when applied to cherries as the first fruit of the season has little flavor, and the last fruit can be a bit weaker.

New crop POTATOES have helped markets ease. The Farmers to Families Food Box Program has provided a strong wave of demand for potatoes and as we got deeper into this year's storage crop, supplies ran tight. States like IDAHO and WASHINGTON are harvesting new crop potatoes and it looks to be a smooth transition.
