MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 37 - 2020
Good Afternoon,
New crop APPLES are being harvested as we speak! By the end of September, we should see fresh availability on nearly every variety out of Washington. Michigan orchards are also harvesting but are another week or two out from packing any significant volume. Look for the USDA food box program to keep pushing the demand on 12/3# bagged fruit.
ASPARAGUS is currently in good supply. There is plenty of Peruvian grass flying into Miami and supplies out of Mexico are also keeping pace.
STRAWBERRIES are seeing some quality issues due to all the heat in California. Any cheap deals on strawberries right now are trouble. BLUEBERRY supplies are mostly steady. RASP and BLACKBERRIES are still a bit tight but a boost of fruit out of Mexico is expected later on this month.
KIWI is seeing lighter supplies as we near the end of the Chilean season.
BROCCOLI supplies have gotten TIGHT in California. Record setting HEAT has brought on shorter supplies, forcing growers to grade out the product that has been damaged by the heat. Look for this market to remain active for at least the next few weeks.
VALENCIA ORANGES remain in short supply, especially on sizes 88 and smaller. Pricing has been creeping up weekly, and the extension of phase 2 of the Farmers to Families program looks to maintain the already strong demand.
Record setting temperatures are expected in California this Friday. As another heatwave bakes growing areas, LETTUCE and LEAF are getting active. ROMAINE has been in tight supply for some time and that's surely not going to change this week. The ICEBERG market is soft today, but our bet is that things will get interesting on Monday after the heatwave hits this weekend.
SPINACH and SPRING MIX have also become victim to the heat. High temperatures knocked out tons of expected production. PLEASE EXPECT SOME ADDITIONAL MOISTURE IN SPINACH for the next week or so.
We are looking at another 2-3 weeks on PEACHES and NECTARINES and another 5-6 weeks on PLUMS, with ANGELINO varieties going even further past that.
