MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 47
Good Afternoon and Happy Thanksgiving from all of us here at GPS!
Whether you celebrate Thanksgiving or not, you can probably see the pressure it puts on the produce industry. Supply, demand, logistics, and all corners of the industry are tested in order to feed the families across America.
Despite Thanksgivings controversial beginnings, a positive message remains. Remember to be thankful for everything you have, especially your loved ones. We would like to thank everyone in the industry for making it happen, but we owe a special thanks to our customers for helping us get to where we are today. Thank you all from everyone here at GPS!
Last year around Thanksgiving the buzz was all about ROMAINE. Well, this year has been no different. Last Saturday, the CDC advised that all romaine from SALINAS, CALIFORNIA should not be consumed. The US government is still maintaining that message as we approach our Thanksgiving holiday. The good news is all GPS shipments from the LAST TWO WEEKS, and moving forward, have been and will be from NON-IMPLICATED GROWING AREAS.
OFFSHORE MELONS are making an impact here in South Florida. CANTALOUPES are out for a bargain, while HONEYDEWS are still holding on to higher prices but relief is in sight. All signs point to a healthy offshore season. Take a look at our "Weekly Fresh" for a great special on CANTALOUPES!
BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER prices have come off significantly. Supplies are picking up in YUMA, while several other growing areas in California are still in play. Take a look at our "Weekly Fresh" for a great special on CAULIFLOWER!
Florida STRAWBERRIES are picking up strength. Cooler weather has slowed down supplies and firmed up the fruit. As long as weather patterns hold, we should be in for a steady Florida crop.
EASTERN VEG is a moving target at the moment. The Thanksgiving week is always a tough gauge of where the market is, but it looks like supplies are getting better across the board. Just in time for the California romaine scare, we are into FLORIDA LETTUCE AND ROMAINE!
More as it happens,
