MARKET UPDATE 02.17.25
Good afternoon,
The CDS, or Customs Documentation System platform, underwent scheduled maintenance this week. The clock turned back a few decades as all border crossings were manually processed during this period. causing delays in crossings all week due to the manual process. Mixed BERRIES, PEPPER, AVOCADO, TOMATOES, EGGPLANT, and more are all seeing firmer markets as we head into next week. This is not tariff related, just routine maintenance on the customs documentation system.
The cool weather holding back FLORIDA STRAWBERRIES dissipated in what we thought was the perfect time for the Valentines Day pull. Unfortunately, we have come to find out that the fruit has not ripened fast enough to recover. This season has been a complete miss for Florida growers, as it looks like the warmer conditions are going to have supplies hit major surplus just after the biggest demand push for their season has passed. In the difficult profession of farming, these bad breaks can make a world of a difference in many people's livelihoods.
LETTUCE, ROMAINE, BROCCOLI, CAULIFLOWER, and the rest of Arizona veg production looks to remain steady this week. Several storms passed through the region causing some uncertainty but it looks as though the skies have cleared. We may continue to see isolated issues to condition here and there but market pricing remains competitive.
CELERY is FULLY STOCKED here in Florida! We will have HEARTS, SLEEVED, and NAKED CELERY on ad for the next two weeks as suppliers are eager to move through production. The offers will be on our WEEKLY FRESH ad and therefore be passed on to all customers!
CHERRIES have about one to two more weeks left! Import season is beginning to dry up and importers are effectively moving up markets by a few dollars each week until we reach the last. It's unbelievable how time flies as we have already received production updates from our California CHERRY growers. It feels crazy to say, but late spring and the following summer are not too far away!
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
