Market Update 05/26/23
Good afternoon,
Another week goes by and GRAPES remain the most troubled market in the industry. We are starting to see supplies from Mexico cross into the United States but only in very small numbers. The pricing and availability are the main problem but we are also seeing trucking delays due to product crossing times being false or days behind schedule. GREEN SEEDLESS are going to be the first NEW CROP grapes available while new crop RED SEEDLESS will start to trickle in sometime next week.
CHERRIES and STONE FRUIT out of California are just getting going! Growers have started to harvest PEACHES and NECTARINES, both of which we will have available next week in 2LB POUCHES that are great for retail. CHERRIES are just getting started and production is still very limited. We are going to have CHERRIES in bags next week and are planning for CLAMSHELLS the first week of June.
California veg markets are quiet this week and let.s enjoy it! LETTUCE, LEAF, BROCCOLI, and CAULIFLOWER are all in good supply, setting up some favorable pricing to help kickstart the month of June.
The one outlier on the west coast is CELERY. Pricing is incredibly high as there is very little volume available. Southern California production is winding down while we are still several weeks out from any significant production out of Salinas. Look for markets to remain high on CELERY for the next few weeks.
ORANGE crops are beginning to transition from NAVEL to the VALENCIA variety. We are seeing price increases on all ORANGES but especially smaller fruit. Valencia crops typically run small, so that may help small orange pricing once we transition over. However, reports indicated that this season's valencia crop is running larger than normal so we will have to wait and see what happens as the transition unfolds.
More as it happens,
