MARKET UPDATE AUGUST 9-13, 2021
Good afternoon,
NEW CROP GALA and GINGER GOLD APPLES have started this week out of Washington! Prices remain strong on apples and will stay that way for the next few weeks while volumes start to accumulate. Next up, we will see new GOLD and HONEYCRISP, followed by RED and FUJI apples in the coming weeks.
D’ANJOU PEARS will gap on them sometime in the next few weeks. Old crop out of Washington are like a needle in a haystack, and if found, they are a high dollar piece of fruit. We will have a mid-size old crop D’ANJOU for the next few weeks but will complement the gap in supply with some new crop California BARTLETT PEARS. BOSC Pears out of California are also fresh crop and are the most expensive pear in the country right now.
GRAPE supplies continue to improve out West. Look for quality, price, and availability to continue to improve on all varieties.
SMALL ORANGES are limited. Orders are being held to 6 week averages due to the supply shortage on sizes 113 and smaller, plus the back to school demand push. Please be open to larger sizes, such as 88ct, if you want your orders covered in full. Although we are dealing with a shortage on NEW CROP VALENCIAS, quality is much improved from the late Navels.
Storage POTATOES out of Colorado and Idaho are nearly finished for the season. Opposite of the oranges, potatoes are TIGHT on LARGE SIZES. As we move into new crop out of Nebraska and back into Colorado and Washington, we should see availability on large spuds improve.
Chinese GARLIC is out of the market, so we are seeing market pricing move higher. Spain, Argentina, and California garlic are available but more costly than the Chinese product. GINGER is seeing the opposite change while Brazilian product has great availability and sellers are looking to move.
STONE FRUIT season is going strong. We may only have a few weeks left with cherries so get them while you can!
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
