MARKET UPDATE DECEMBER 30- JAN 7, 2022

Happy New Year!

2021 is coming to a close and we are grateful for the opportunities shared and relationships we have created over the last twelve months. Everyone here at GPS would like to wish you a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year!

FLORIDA production remains strong. SQUASH, PEPPER, CORN, LETTUCE, LEAF, CUCUMBER, TOMATOES, and other commodities are in good shape heading into the new year. Conditions have been mild and there haven’t been too many rain showers to speak of.

IMPORTED products continue to run into challenges this season. We expect minor improvements early in 2022, mostly thanks to a post-holiday drop in volume, but many challenges will remain. Higher trucking and handling costs are part of the problem but may also be part of the solution. We are seeing the companies that are notoriously the cheapest, struggle the most.

CAULIFLOWER prices are on the way up. Cold growing conditions in Yuma over the last week or so have slowed down the growth cycle. Lighter supplies are expected for the next few weeks.

AVOCADO supplies have taken a hit from a lack of labor over the holiday weeks. As long as the growing conditions remain favorable, we should see this market bounce back in the next two to three weeks. However, with the Super Bowl coming up in early February, who knows what sort of market pricing will hold through the month of January.

CELERY is now available out of FLORIDA. We were beginning to see stronger markets out West, but now that Florida is producing solid numbers, markets should stay relatively flat.

GRAPES continue to be a problem. We are past the late season California quality issues, but now it’s difficult to source anything. BLACK GRAPES are incredibly difficult to source, while RED and GREEN GRAPES only have slightly better availability. Pricing is up but we will be back into CLAMSHELL RED SEEDLESS GRAPES next week!

More as it happens,
