Good Afternoon,
ASPARAGUS prices have started to come off a bit. Stronger volumes out of Mexico and a downward demand trend will continue to push this market towards seasonal price levels.
GREEN SKIN AVOCADO supplies are nearly non-existent. This market will be active until we see some arrivals from the Dominican Republic in another week or so. We also anticipate demand to pick up on HASS AVOCADOS. Americans consume over 69 million pounds of avocados on Super Bowl Sunday, and with the big game only a few weeks out, a huge swing in demand looks to be inevitable.
A complete wash out for yesterday and today is bringing some uncertainty to LETTUCE and LEAF markets this week. Most shippers still seem to be confident in their production, but this is something to keep an eye on.
BANANAS and PLANTAINS remain in short supply. The industry and local communities in Central America are still recovering from the two major hurricanes that hit just a few months ago. As of now, we still expect short supplies through February.
Quality issues persist with domestic and imported OKRA.
GINGER supplies are very tight, and quality is not ideal. Central American supplies are down to nearly nothing here in Miami and most of the Chinese product arrives out on the West Coast. This market is going up in a hurry and does not show any signs of slowing down next week.
PINEAPPLE arrivals have hit a gap here in South Florida. All of the fruit that was available this week has since dried up and we are not expecting any arrivals until early next week. Sizing may need to be switched around in order to fill orders.
We have moved past the planting gaps on FLORIDA LETTUCE and ROMAINE. Our growers are telling us that once we get into February, we should see steady supplies on Florida leaf.
STONE FRUIT is in full swing! We are seeing a drop in supply on CHERRIES, but PEACHES, NECTARINES, PLUMS, and APRICOTS are all available!
More as it happens,
Parker Tannehill
