MARKET UPDATE JULY 18-22, 2022
Good afternoon,
CABBAGE, SQUASH, GREEN BELL PEPPER, CUCUMBERS and EGGPLANT all continue their move up the east coast this week. As product transitions from the Carolinas into Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Ohio, we will see small gaps in supply pop up here and there. Expect availability and pricing to fluctuate on these items over the next few weeks.
BANANAS and PLANTAINS will remain extremely tight next week due to the current supply shortage out of the tropics. Prorates are expected to continue for at least another two weeks.
We are now a few weeks into CHERRY season and it looks like volume and quality are improving. Most of the damage done during the growing phase was to cherry trees at lower elevations. Now that we are progressing through the season, and higher up the mountain ranges, CHERRIES are in a much better position.
BOSC PEAR supplies are tight while smaller sizes like 120ct are completely unavailable. Import fruit has been very large with most of the product ranging in sizes from 60 to 80ct. California BOSC pears will be the next in line and should start up in two weeks or less.
Steady production continues on LETTUCE and LEAF out of California. Markets are competitive on iceberg and romaine as shippers look to increase demand. Good volume and competitive pricing should continue for another few weeks.
We are fully switched over to Washington GALA 198ct fruit. Pricing will increase from our storage crop and availability will be light. Look to get in orders early for the best chance for 100% fill.
North America is in the midst of a RUSSET POTATO shortage. Producers in the US and Canada are both struggling to meet demand. Harvest season in Idaho, Colorado and other US growing regions is still nearly a month away and storage facilities are nearly empty across the country. Be prepared for a very tight market and prorates for the next few weeks until the long awaited harvest of US Russets begins.
Availability on very affordable MX grapes is coming to a close and we are seeing what was a definite two tier market of MX and CA grapes coming into alignment. We will be sourcing more from the CA growing regions in the coming weeks.
More as it happens,
