MARKET UPDATE OCTOBER 4-8TH, 2021
Good afternoon,
GEORGIA crops are starting up in a light way. This week, we should see sufficient supplies of PEPPER, SQUASH, CUCUMBER, GREENS and more. Barring any unforeseen weather events, we should see supplies and quality increase through the month of October.
PUMPKINS and other decorative Halloween goods like GOURDS, HARD SQUASH, and INDIAN CORN are all available! A combination of pumpkin bins, mini white and orange pumpkins, gourds, and Indian corn will provide a setting that is sure to set the holiday mood for your customers.
The BROCCOLI market continues to worsen this week. The late summer heat pushed supplies ahead of schedule and now most growers are left with little to nothing to sell. The lack of supply will continue into the next few weeks.
CAULIFLOWER markets will follow the same trend as BROCCOLI a week or two behind schedule.
CANADIAN supplies of LETTUCE, ROMAINE, and CABBAGE, only have a few more weeks to go. LETTUCE and ROMAINE will be finished by the 18th of October, and CABBAGE will continue a few weeks after that.
HONEYDEW supplies are limited, especially on larger sizes. We are nearing the end of the deal out in California, so we may see higher pricing and quality weaken over time. CANTALOUPE markets are also on the rise but have better availability than HONEYDEWS. We are going to see early desert melons start up in the coming weeks. Hopefully, there will be some overlap in supply and a smooth transition.
STRAWBERRY supplies are picking up in Santa Maria and Oxnard. Better supplies should bring on some pricing relief in the next couple weeks. FLORIDA STRAWBERRIES are right around the corner! With an expected start date of the first of November, we should see volumes strong enough to start shipping mid-November.
More as it happens,
