MARKET UPDATE SEPTEMBER 27 - OCTOBER 1st, 2021
Good Afternoon!
Today is the first full day of Fall and its hard to believe we are rounding the corner towards the end of the year. After a brutal summer with incredible heat in many growing areas, we are starting to see some cooler weather coming down from Canada across the US. Although the transition between seasons has its challenges, we are certainly looking forward to the cooler weather that Fall brings.
With the weather changes, items like BLUEBERRIES are finished up in the US. Mexico has not started crossing fruit and we are seeing very light supplies on new crop Blues out of Peru. Argentina is starting slowly as well so prices will remain strong until the volume kicks in from South America in the next 3 or 4 weeks.
The YELLOW ONIONS are finishing harvest in the next few weeks in the primary growing areas of Idaho, Oregon and Washington. These are the thick husk yellows that will last us through the winter. This area was hit hard with very hot/smoky weather this summer and the result is a crop that will be on the smaller size making Jumbos tight and priced out much higher than Mediums. If the early crop reports are accurate, this could last into the early part of the new year and leave an opening for imported yellow onions from Spain or elsewhere to fill the need.
The summer CITRUS season is winding down. The growers are waiting for fruit to be ready in District 3 which is further South in New Mexico and Arizona. Before that starts, we will see very short supplies and strong markets on small size ORANGES (113 and 138's) that primarily get utilized for school programs. Imports are just about finished.
Extended port delays out West are causing significant delays in Ocean Shipped ASPARAGUS from Peru. This has tightened the market as there is not enough Air space to accommodate the needs of the US market. Mexico is having weather issues with rain so crossings are minimal
CANTALOUPES and HONEYDEWS are winding down in California and quality is hit or miss. We will soon be pulling from the desert growing areas of Arizona and Southern California before we start with Imports from Central America in about 6 weeks.
More as it happens!
