MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 33

Good Afternoon,

We are starting to see NEW CROP APPLES pop up. Although the early season varieties are not the strongest of the season, it is still an indicator of things to come. Below are some expected start dates on apples .

GALA (SEP 9), HONEYCRISP and FUJI (SEP 19), GOLDEN and RED DELICIOUS (SEP 23rd)

BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER are in GREAT SUPPLY. Warmer temperatures have brought on harvests ahead of schedule. Quality has also taken a step forward as these markets have come off.

CILANTRO has been a tough commodity for the past few weeks. Markets have been higher due to shorter supplies in MEXICO and CALIFORNIA. Past heat waves damaged crops, erasing some of the harvests many growers were depending on to maintain seasonal volumes. Markets are showing signs of relief, but price levels may come down slowly.

We are starting to see back to school demand affect several markets. We have already mentioned apples, however, ORANGES are also showing signs of tighter supplies. SIZES 113 and SMALLER are facing the brunt of the demand and are therefore even more scarce. Pricing hasn’t taken off yet, but it may be something to keep an eye on. SMALL MANDARIN and CLEMENTINES are also tightening up!

Most of the CALIFORNIA VEG shippers are dealing on LETTUCE and LEAF. Although we are seeing increased demand, warmer temps have helped move things along nicely. LETTUCE is somewhat active but healthy supplies are keeping the market lower. ROMAINE HEARTS have been snug for the past few months, but some shippers have better supplies than others and are dealing. CANADIAN LETTUCE and LEAF are still fairing well as we are moving into the peak of the season.

CORN has finally started to come off! As veg has transitioned up the east coast, corn has struggled to find a steady supply along the way. Now that Michigan and Canadian markets are getting into season, we are seeing better supplies on corn. Although we are still hauling it all the way down to Miami, so freight rates will affect cost, markets are still coming off significantly.

We have seen some trouble on MELON supplies due to the same heat waves out west. It looks like we have moved into better supplies as all the recent arrivals have looked great! Besides quality concerns, the heat forces growth onto the melons so the sizing is leaning on the larger size. We should be into better supplies for now, but we will continue to keep an eye on quality.

Next week will be THE LAST WEEK FOR CHERRIES!!! We are ready to sell so please give us a call for some volume deals to finish off the season!

More as it happens,
