MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 34

Good Afternoon,

All of us at GPS would like to send our thoughts and well wishes to everyone who is in the path of Hurricane Dorian, as well as the ones who may have already endured the storm. We hope that you and your loved ones are safe and secure.

This week feels like the calm before the storm, and it quite literally is. Markets are steady for the most part but with HURRICANE DORIAN passing through the Atlantic, there are several markets to keep an eye on.

TOMATO growing regions look to be in the target line of Hurricane Dorian. Currently, it looks like the storm is set to make landfall somewhere in Florida, or possibly Georgia and the Carolinas. Wherever it lands on the East Coast, we will see tremendous amounts of rain in TOMATO growing regions. This may be one situation where having supplies scattered over three states is a good thing. We are already dealing with lighter summer supplies and the expected rainfall will add another level of uncertainty. Expect some volatility in tomato markets into next week.

WATERMELON supplies are getting scarce! With Florida harvests finished, the Eastern US market is dependent on smaller supplies from areas like the Carolinas and Kentucky. We should see an increase in cost for the duration of the domestic season with markets bottoming out around November/December.

Due to hot weather this summer, BROCCOLI supplies have been moving along ahead of schedule. We are still in decent supply, but shippers are warning of a gap coming in the next week or so. CAULIFLOWER tends to follow in BROCCOLI'S footsteps so make sure to watch both markets carefully over the next few weeks.

ANJOU PEARS are off the radar next week! We will still have some 100ct fruit available for another week or so, but for LARGE SIZE PEARS we will only have BARTLETTS and BOSC. This annual gap will typically last about a month until NEW CROP D'ANJOU'S are available in Washington.

Please keep in touch, let us know you are safe, and advise if there is anything we can do to help!

Stay safe out there everyone.
