MARKET UPDATE WEEK # 5 - 2020
Good Afternoon,
As seasonable conditions return, so does supply. Several factors lead to supply shortages, but Mother Nature is the top component. We are seeing gradual warming in most growing areas along with some light showers expected next week. Eastern and Western growing regions should start turning out more product over the next week.
West coast commodities like, CELERY, LETTUCE, ROMAINE, LEAF, and BROCCOLI, are all in GOOD SUPPLY thanks to favorable growing conditions this week. We should see this trend continue into next week with more warm weather on its way.
CAULIFLOWER is the outlier when it comes to west coast veg. Cauliflower yields were severely damaged by previous cold, wet conditions in Yuma and the slower growth commodity is taking a bit longer to catch up. We should see better supplies by the end of next week.
Valentines day pull is on its way! In just two short weeks, the major STRAWBERRY holiday will be upon us. Florida growing regions have seen some better temperatures this week but still not quite enough sunlight. This market will most likely stay right where it is through the holiday and come off from there.
IMPORT GRAPES are starting to improve. We are seeing more supply on both RED and GREEN varieties. The market on GREEN GRAPES is better than RED partially due to a weaker demand. RED volumes will continue to get better over the next few weeks.
It looks like PLUMS will be back next week! Arrivals have been limited and good quality PLUMS have been very tough to come by. Supplies will be more readily available next week and get better from there.
BANANAS are in a demand exceeds situation. Markets have been slowly moving upwards over the past few weeks and will remain tight for the immediate future. Cold weather down in Costa Rica has delayed harvests for several weeks. PLANTAINS are actually ahead of schedule, coming off to near promotable volumes.
Also due to cold conditions in Costa Rica, PINEAPPLES are starting to slow down. FOB's are up and some shippers have started to prorate. The stronger shippers are taking care of their consistent customer base; It pays to have consistency!
SNOWS and SNAPS look to be getting into better supplies next week. Call and ask about possible specials.
BLUE, BLACK, and RASPBERRY markets are beginning to shift! Supplies are weaker out of Mexico this week and we are starting to see pricing move upwards. With so many growing areas, we hope for this to be a slow shift but as usual in this industry, you can never be too sure.
Keep an eye out for our Weekly Fresh this week, touting some great deals on classic commodities as well as some super specialty fruits and veggies!
More as it happens,
