MARKET UPDATE April 19-23, 2021
Good Afternoon,
From BLUEBERRIES to STRAWBERRIES, berry supplies continue to run short. BLUEBERRIES are off to an uncertain start here in Florida and that trend looks to continue for at least another week. BLACK and RASPBERRIES are limited out of Mexico thanks to some cooler weather a few weeks back. STRAWBERRY supplies are coming up short of demand. California harvests are going to pace behind demand for another week or two, but there is some warm weather coming that may help supplies pick up and prices come down.
BROCCOLI and CAULIFLOWER continue to see abundant supplies out of California. Market prices should remain competitive through next week.
The LIME market has been high for over a month now and it looks like supplies will remain limited for a little while longer.
FREIGHT costs have hit a new high for this time of the year due to higher gas prices and a lack of drivers. DOT week will be the first week of May, so we expect trucking prices to remain high for the foreseeable future.
FLORIDA CITRUS is finishing up for the year. GRAPEFRUIT supplies are about to join tangerines in being done for the year, which means that ORANGES are not far behind. FLORIDA ORANGES should be available for another two to three weeks, but quality becomes a concern as we approach the end of the deal.
SMALL GALA and GRANNY SMITH apples are beginning to get tight. Some of our Michigan growers seem to think that they will have small gala apples longer than originally anticipated. SMALL GRANNY SMITH apples look like they will be scarce until new crop comes available late this year.
TOMATOES, YELLOW SQUASH, and ZUCCHINI are all in good supply here in Florida.
Florida LETTUCE and ROMAINE will be week to week from here on out. We are close to the end of the season and as the weather warms, the chance of quality issues becomes more significant.
More as it happens,
